We’ve made a special effort this year to focus on classic literature—everything from Aesop to Curious George; Charlotte’s Web to Little Women. These are stories that carry a great moral, build character and can be enjoyed over and over again. They are called classics for a reason! Most of our kids love to read, but some have needed a little extra motivation this year. But how to motivate them to keep reading, especially titles they may not be familiar with?
The Classic Cards are a colorful way to encourage kids to read, a great way to keep track of what they have read, and a perfect way to motivate even a hesitant reader. Each card has a title and plenty of room to write (ok, as much as will fit on a baseball Card).
Here are the Classic Cards basics:
1. Choose one of the classic books listed on the cards.
2. Read aloud to the family, to the child, or have them read it alone.
3. Have them fill out their card with a favorite quote from the book or tell their favorite part or character.
4. Have each child write their name and the date on each card as they complete it.
5. Punch a hole in the card and slip it onto a metal key ring.
6. Hang their key rings in a high traffic area in the house so everyone can see their ring fill up with cards.
Options:
• List and tell about the author on each card.
• Give it a 1-5 star rating (draw your own stars).
• Older children can describe their favorite character.
• Younger children can draw a picture of their favorite scene-on the back.
• Laminate each card for durability. Our kids love to laminate their own on our inexpensive laminator.
Games
• Sometimes I take all the key rings in the house and we play, “Name That Character”…I read the descriptions that the kids have written and they guess the classic story.
• Other times I read the title and they must tell the author, or the other way around author to title.
• I pair up the kids with each other, grandparents, or a friend and have them ask each other about the classics on their key rings. They enjoy seeing what each other wrote about their favorite stories.
The Classic Cards have been a fun and easy way to keep kids reading and writing about great literature! The results are magic. They love to collect their favorite books and are amazed at how quickly they can fill up their key ring!
