It’s time to take a trip!
Supplies
- Postcards from your trip or make your own (see Pattern Chapter)
- Pencils or pens
Benefits
- This is a painless way to create a wonderful memoir of that great vacation or field trip.
Directions
1. As we visit a new city or event, I always try to pick up a handful of postcards or make your own. (see Patterns)
2. On our way home, each of the kids picks out a couple of cards.
3. They must write about that particular postcard. They can write what they remember about it, their favorite part about being there, or something funny that happened there. The rule at our house is you write at least one sentence for whatever grade you are in. (5th grade= five sentences.)
4. Make sure everyone adds their name, age, and a date!
5. Gather all the postcards and punch a hole in the top left hand corner.
6. Put on a key ring.
7. Presto, you have a great memento from your trip!
Hints for Parents and Teachers
This is a quick way to remember a trip or vacation. Even reluctant writers will not be threatened by just a few sentences on the back of a postcard. We keep a basket of past “Post-Card Reports”. The kids love to rummage through them and laugh over the funny things that they wrote about or remembered from our different trips.
Do It Again!
Dreamer’s Post Card Report
Is there somewhere you’ve dreamed of going? Why not create postcards from the places you’d like to visit! Be sure to write on the back what exciting thing happened there!
Science Post Card Report
Make post-cards from Space…one for each planet and the sun and moon. Write what you would see if you were there. Other examples: Post Cards from the Rainforest, the Center of the Earth, the Ocean, etc.
Book Character Post Card Report
Follow a character in a book and make a postcard for each of the places he or she visited. Write on the back the fun things that happened there in the story.
History Post Card Report
Make postcards from different times in history. You could have a whole handful of post-cards from Ancient Egypt. What would you design on the front? Add your report on the back!
